At Ombar we’re passionate about making the most delicious chocolate without any dairy. But no one wants to compromise on the sumptuous, melt-in-the-mouth, creamy texture and taste of one of the world’s favourite snacks. Least of all us!

So to make our chocolate taste creamy, whilst only using plant-based ingredients, we tap into the amazing properties of one of the most versatile fruits, the magnificent coconut. Specifically, we use creamed coconut to make our vegan ‘mylk chocolate’, instead of dairy milk.

Creamed coconut, also known as coconut concentrate, is the unsweetened, dehydrated coconut flesh which has been ground into a semi-solid paste. And the name ‘coconut concentrate’ is oh so appropriate… Creamed coconut has the most deliciously, intense coconut flavour with a creamy texture and a beautiful coconut aroma. Delicious on its own, but taken to new levels when added to our raw Ecuadorian cacao!

But the benefits don’t end there. Not only is creamed coconut a great vegan alternative and packed full of flavour, but it’s also a healthier alternative to dairy. Coconut milk and coconut cream are high in a type of fat called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Although these are saturated fats, they are actually associated with health benefits.

MCTs are digested and absorbed differently to long-chain fats (the majority of saturated fats in animal foods). They go directly to the liver and can be burned directly for energy, whereas long-chain fats travel around the body first and may be stored in the tissues. Consequently, not only could MCTs be good for our energy levels, they may support weight loss – or at the very least, are less likely to contribute to weight gain.

MCTs also have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. This means they could help protect against overgrowth of ‘bad’ bacteria or yeasts in the gut and generally offer some extra protection against infection.

So it’s pretty clear why we love creamed coconut so much. It’s a completely vegan alternative to dairy. It has the most delicious flavour and makes our chocolate indulgently creamy. And to top it all off coconut cream is a source of good plant-based fats which can improve energy levels! So let’s hear it for the magnificent coconut!
